Handcrafted perfection
The core kit is TAMA STAR, built in Japan with premium materials for high sensitivity and wide dynamic range. At Studio Gröndahl, David Castillo fine-tuned head choices, treatments and placement so the shells breathe with the room rather than fight it. Drummers who arrive with their own sets often gravitate to this house kit once they hear the response: quick to the touch, even across the toms, and full without excess boom. That balance of nuance and power gives you straightforward control at mixdown, whether you’re sculpting surgical kicks or letting the room mics carry weight.
The antidote for robotic machine gun kicks
Double kicks are captured as true stereo, reflecting natural left/right positioning of a drummer in a room. You can run a centred single-kick patch for straight rock parts, then switch to separately recorded left/right pedals when speed and realism matter. Addictive Drums 2’s Alternating kick feature automatically voices rapid MIDI as an “every-other-hit” performance, removing that fatiguing machine-gun effect without rewriting patterns. The pay-off is immediate, more depth, better imaging and less sample fatigue in fast passages, with the option to collapse to mono centre when a tighter, focussed low-end is required.
Six snare options
With Modern Heavy, you get six distinct snare choices tailored to heavy production needs. The headline Bell Brass is delivered in three tunings: high, medium and low, so you can match crack, body and overtones to the track. Supporting it are a 14x3.5 Pearl Free Floating Brass built for incisive blast beats, a 15x8 TAMA Star Reserve that supplies massive low-end punch, and a 14x6.5 Ludwig Black Beauty captured open for lively sustain. Whether you want tight, dry articulation or resonant aggression that slices through dense guitars, there’s a snare here that fits the brief without extra layering.
The new Terminator: King of all snares
The 50th Anniversary 14x6.5 TAMA Mastercraft “The Bell Brass” earned its reputation for a reason. In this ADpak it’s sampled in three separate tunings, giving you a choice of mix-ready flavours from searing and quick to weighty and authoritative. Its rifle-crack attack stays audible through stacked rhythm guitars, while the shell’s musical overtones add presence instead of clutter. Because each tuning was captured discretely, you can pick the one that complements your arrangement rather than forcing a single sound to fit every context.
The lush warmth of Paiste
The cymbal palette blends Paiste 2002 classics with 602 Modern Essentials for clean stick definition, smooth decay and controlled wash. Crafted from B20 bronze, they deliver bright, articulate highs with warm low fundamentals, ideal when you need clarity without harshness. A standout is the characterful Paiste flanger stack that’s lived at Studio Gröndahl since Sepultura’s “Machine Messiah” sessions, complete with scars from Eloy Casagrande’s playing. The result is a set that tracks quickly, sits naturally with distorted guitars and offers expressive swells, tight chokes and precise accents across tempos.
The Studio
Recorded at Stockholm’s Studio Gröndahl in the Gröndal district, these drums are enveloped in a studio room known for rich analogue character and dependable, musical acoustics. The space has welcomed formative heavy and rock artists, including Sepultura, Carcass, The Hives and Bloodbath, and that experience shows in the capture: focused close mics, controllable ambience, and a room tone that adds weight without mud. It’s a practical foundation for modern heavy mixes so you can shape size and depth without fighting the space.
Recorded with a master of the craft
Production was led by David Castillo, whose discography spans Opeth, Whitechapel, Katatonia, Carcass, Dark Tranquillity, Leprous, Soen, Soilwork, Candlemass and Bloodbath. His approach is detail-driven: adjust the smallest elements so the performance and song dictate the sound, not the other way around. That translates here into carefully curated heads, tunings, mic positions and gain staging, giving you consistent transients and phase-coherent room energy.
