Its smooth action captures subtle dynamic changes from delicate pianissimo passages through to powerful fortissimo performances, making expressive playing feel natural. The main playing range has a tonal quality that resembles a compact concert grand, while the pronounced midrange, warm bass, and balanced response help the instrument sit comfortably in almost any arrangement. Built in Berlin Kreuzberg during the early 20th century, this C. Bechstein upright has spent generations with families in the Stuttgart region before becoming the instrument of pianist and film composer Mick Baumeister. Throughout its lifetime it inspired performers, teachers, and composers, retaining the distinctive tonal character created by its generous resonating wood construction. Vienna Symphonic Library captured this unique instrument at Stage B of Vienna Synchron Stage using an extensive multi-microphone recording setup, preserving both its historic personality and the detailed sound needed for today's productions.
To capture every nuance of the original piano, Vienna Symphonic Library developed a highly precise motion-control system using a silent solenoid-driven robotic finger. This system reproduces keystrokes and release movements with exceptional consistency, accurately recording subtle differences in velocity, note length, and key release behaviour. The result is a highly detailed virtual instrument that responds naturally across the full dynamic range, allowing expressive performances while preserving the tonal subtleties that define this vintage Bechstein.
