Key Features
The Special Stage Systems Oscillographic Block is the ultimate chip-audio workstation capable of creating classic arcade, 8-bit drum sounds and melodies. Designed for maximum flexibility, the Oscillographic Block features a 3 channel digital synthesizer voice, preset memory, algorithmic patch generators, and CV control. It also features 6 programmable function generators that can output smooth or stepped waveforms. The Special Stage Systems Oscillographic Block is perfect for creative modular users who want to achieve the classic video game arcade sound.

The Special Stage Systems Oscillographic Block utilises the SN76489 chip. This chip is a digital sound generator that features two square wave channels, a noise channel, and dedicated 4-bit amplifiers. The chip features a rich, dark sound that was used in many classic videogame and computer systems including the Sega Game Gear, Sega Master System, BBC Micro, ColecoVision, and IBM PCjr. With direct control over the physical sound chip and 1V/oct scaled 10-bit pitch, the Oscillographic Block allows you to re-create those classic bit-crushed sounds.
Each SN76 channel features two dedicated function generators for controlling the pitch and amplitude, for a total of six function generators per preset. When in standard mode, the function generators snap to the discreet values. In interpolation mode, the generators glide smoothly between the values instead, which results in generating continuous LFO-like waveforms. The Oscillographic Block offers various standard shapes via the envelope graph interface. The function generators are capable of producing both smooth waves and stepped sequences. Operating across a wide range of speeds, the Oscillographic Block is suitable for creating percussive drums, one shot effects, evolving textures, sequences, and more.
There are a total of 8 preset slots that you can save patches to. The presets store virtually every parameter, and can be instantly recalled using the Preset CV input, or the dedicated gate inputs. The unique preset system allows 8 patches to be stored to the SD card for easy management and portability. If you store a one shot sound into each slot, the 8 inputs on the center of the module can be used to trigger each preset, just like a drum machine. The RANDOM button allows you to algorithmically generate the presets. It has 3 distinct modes; envelope mode, drum mode, and sequence mode. Envelope mode randomises the function generator shape. Drum mode generates bass drums, hats, snares, cymbals, and effects, while the sequence mode generates looping sequences and patches. These can be used to create complex rhythmic sequences and melodies.
