Create sound from living input
Pocket SCÍON translates biological activity into audio in real time. By connecting the built-in sensor to living organisms or using the touchpad, you can generate shifting soundscapes that respond to organic changes. This makes it especially useful for users exploring generative composition, interactive installations, or experimental sound design. There’s no need for previous technical knowledge to start — the device is standalone and ready to use right away.
It’s also a unique entry point for introducing biofeedback into musical or multimedia contexts, offering a tactile and engaging way to work with data that’s usually invisible. For those looking to build more complex systems, the audio it produces can easily be integrated with external instruments or digital setups.
Control external gear via MIDI
Alongside generating sound, Pocket SCÍON outputs MIDI data, making it easy to control synths, samplers, and software instruments. It supports five-note polyphony, and each note carries adjustable velocity and assignable MIDI CC values. These messages can be routed through the TRS-MIDI output or the USB port, depending on your setup.
You can switch between single-channel and multichannel MIDI modes. In multichannel mode, each of the five voices sends to its own channel, ideal for routing to multiple destinations in a DAW or splitting control across different external devices. This flexibility makes it a powerful tool for studio setups or live performance environments that rely on MIDI data as part of the workflow.
Use OSC for live visuals and interactive media
For users working with visual software or real-time interaction, Pocket SCÍON also supports OSC messaging through its companion desktop app. When connected to a computer over USB, it broadcasts data via the selected OSC port, based on readings from its internal biofeedback sensor.
This feature opens the door to integrating Pocket SCÍON with creative platforms like Max/MSP, TouchDesigner, Pure Data, and Unreal Engine. It makes it possible to drive real-time visuals or interactive elements using biological input, giving artists and designers a tool for blending natural processes with digital media in an intuitive way.
Shape your sound with custom instruments
In collaboration with ecologist and musician Tarun Nayar (Modern Biology), Instruo developed a set of exclusive instruments for Pocket SCÍON. These are designed specifically for this hardware and respond dynamically to incoming biofeedback signals, giving you ready-to-use sound engines that work straight out of the box.
The included application lets you customise scale, ratcheting, octave range, and MIDI CC mapping per voice, giving you detailed control over how each instrument behaves. You can fine-tune settings to suit your workflow, adapting Pocket SCÍON for solo sessions, complex installations, or collaborative setups. Combined with its intuitive design and connectivity options, these instruments help you stay focused on the creative process.
