The Z Wreck amplifier is well known for deriving a significant portion of its character from the interaction between its preamp and power amp. To translate this into the Synergy format, the design team developed a 0-watt power amplifier that includes a phase inverter and transformer. This inclusion allows the module to reproduce the harmonic bloom and dynamic compression that occur in the original amp’s power stage.
It also enables the module to carry the CUT control which interacts with the power section rather than the preamp. As a result, the module retains the chime, clarity and saturation characteristics that define the Z Wreck. This engineering decision broadens the capabilities of the Synergy ecosystem by showing that complex power amp behaviour can be captured with accuracy.
The original Z Wreck was created with two distinct operational modes. Speed raises the internal voltage to deliver a firm attack and greater clarity across the dynamic range which suits players who prefer immediate response. Comfort uses a slightly reduced voltage to produce a softer feel where notes swell gently after the initial hit.
Both behaviours were important to the artists involved in the amplifier’s development and both have been faithfully reproduced here. With these modes available on the module you can adapt your playing feel to match your technique or the demands of a performance. This emphasis on touch sensitivity is central to the identity of the Z Wreck and remains intact in the modular version.
Two identical channels allow simple switching between clean articulation and driven sustain. Each channel includes Volume, Bass and Treble controls supported by a Cut control that adjusts high-end presence. Independent Master controls help you balance output levels so transitions remain smooth.
This dual layout gives flexibility for players who need variation in gain structure or who require separate rhythm and lead voices. The tonal range covers pristine chime, light push and saturated drive while still maintaining harmonic complexity.
The module uses two Tung Sol 12AX7 valves which reflect the valve choice of the production amplifier. These valves contribute to the upper mid character that separates the Z Wreck from similar designs. The Cathode Select switch on the PCB offers three input circuit configurations that adjust low-end feel and tightness.
Position 1 is the default for this module and uses a 1.5K resistor with a 22uf capacitor which matches the original specification. You can choose alternative positions to tailor the response for different styles or instruments. This level of refinement helps the module remain adaptable while preserving the core voice expected of a Z Wreck.
