Key Features
The PRS Silver Sky John Mayer RW in Tungsten is a refined take on the classic ’60s single-coil guitar, built with PRS precision and Mayer’s exacting ear. Designed as a modern reboot of a vintage favourite, it blends the warmth and familiarity of early ’60s instruments with the consistency and reliability of a brand-new build. From the inverted PRS headstock to the carefully voiced 635JM pickups, every detail has been considered to create a guitar that feels instantly comfortable yet distinctly its own.
An alder body keeps things balanced and resonant, while the rosewood fretboard and subtly rounded 635JM-R neck carve offer a smooth, broken-in feel straight out of the case. The PRS steel tremolo sits flush to the body for solid downwards pitch control and improved acoustic transfer, helping the pickups deliver a full, round voice without harshness. Finished in striking Tungsten and supplied with a premium gig bag, this is a player’s instrument through and through.

The Silver Sky was born from years of collaboration between John Mayer and Paul Reed Smith, with a clear goal: capture the soul of a great 1963–1964 single-coil guitar while refining it for modern players. Every curve, contour and component was studied, tested and reworked until it met Mayer’s standards on stage. The inverted PRS headstock isn’t just visual flair, it improves string pull and tuning stability while keeping the feel familiar. It’s a thoughtful redesign rather than a copy, delivering vintage character with PRS-level consistency and build quality.
The trio of PRS 635JM single-coils are voiced for warmth, clarity and musical balance. They offer a full low end, rich midrange and a sweet top end that avoids the brittle edge often associated with traditional single-coils. Clean tones are open and articulate, while driven sounds retain note definition and dynamic response. Combined with a classic five-way blade switch and simple volume and dual tone controls, you’ve got a wide tonal palette that covers everything from glassy rhythm parts to full and fluid lead lines.
The PRS steel tremolo takes a familiar design and enhances it with Gen III knife-edge screws for smoother action and improved return to pitch. Set flush against the body in its neutral position, it's designed to increase contact with the alder body and boost overall resonance. That added acoustic volume translates directly into a stronger, clearer signal from the pickups. Paired with vintage-style locking tuners and a bone nut, the result is excellent tuning stability without sacrificing classic feel.
This rosewood-equipped version features the 635JM-R neck shape, subtly rounded in the shoulders for a natural, supportive grip. The 7.25” fretboard radius and PRS Medium frets echo early ’60s specs, encouraging expressive bends and chordal work with a familiar, vintage-style feel. A bolt-on maple neck, double-acting truss rod accessible from the headstock, and meticulous fretwork ensure dependable performance in any setting. It’s a neck that feels instantly played-in, yet delivers the precision and stability you’d expect from a modern PRS.
